Sarjis Alam, coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, has filed a case against two controversial Facebook pages on charges of cyberbullying. He filed the case at Shahbagh Police Station in the capital on Thursday (January 23).
The two pages targeted in the case are ‘Department of Baksal University of Dhaka’ and ‘Criminals DU’. It is learned that these pages are run by students of Dhaka University and are accused of spreading rumors and propaganda from them at various times.
In the case statement, Sarjis mentioned that after logging into Facebook at 11:20 am on Wednesday, he saw that fake information was being spread in his name on the two pages. In particular, screenshots of some edited chats of an unused WhatsApp account of his were published and posted. The post made false and defamatory allegations against him.
Sarjis also said that one of the allegations made about him on the Facebook pages is that he was expelled from the post of General Secretary of the July Smriti Foundation, which is completely false. In addition, the pages have also alleged that they are plotting cyberbullying against Nafisa Islam Saqafi, the co-coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement. According to Sarjis, these allegations are completely baseless and fabricated.
In this regard, Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Khalid Mansur said, “Sarjis Alam has filed a case with our police station due to objectionable comments on Facebook. The matter has been handed over to the cyber team. Details will be announced after verifying the pictures and related pages provided by him.”
