India has said that its approach towards Bangladesh is to maintain friendly relations. It wants to develop bilateral relations in a way that will benefit the people of both countries.
Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said this at a weekly media briefing on Friday (January 24).
He said that India wants to maintain relations with Bangladesh in the interest of the people of both countries and that this relationship is ‘independent’, which is not dependent on Bangladesh’s relations with any other country. India wants to stand by a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh.
Jaiswal made this comment in response to a question on the recent development in relations between Bangladesh and Pakistan.
Meanwhile, he also mentioned that India expects a ‘constructive cooperative attitude’ from Bangladesh on the issue of fencing the border.
Asked about media reports about a BSF-BGB director general-level meeting in New Delhi next month, the spokesperson said that the proposed meeting has been discussed, but the date has not been fixed yet.
Responding to a question about fencing the border, Jaiswal said, “There is an agreement between India and Bangladesh to secure the border. He hopes that Bangladesh will look at the matter with a spirit of constructive cooperation. Both sides should implement this agreement.” He added, “We monitor all the developments in this region related to our national security and take appropriate measures to ensure our security.”
