Google has introduced a new feature called ‘Identity Check’ to further strengthen the security of Android devices. This feature will make biometric authentication mandatory for accessing sensitive settings. This means that the user will have to verify their fingerprint or face to complete certain activities.
According to Google, if ‘Identity Check’ is turned on, biometric verification will be required to view saved passwords or passkeys from Google Password Manager and to autofill passwords in other apps. Similarly, biometric authentication will also be required for important tasks such as changing the screen lock type, factory resetting the device, turning off the ‘Find My Device’ feature or disabling any anti-theft feature. In addition, this security measure will also apply to changing the list of trusted locations, setting up a new device, adding or removing a Google account, and enabling developer options.
Google said that this new feature will make users’ accounts more secure and no unauthorized person will be able to use the device. It is currently available on Google’s Pixel phones running Android 15 and certain Samsung Galaxy models running One UI 7.
