Students from seven colleges have made new five-point demands and have given an ultimatum to give a new program after 24 hours if the announced six-point demands are not fulfilled.
They announced this program at a press conference at Dhaka College’s Shaheed Minar on Tuesday (January 28) evening. At that time, the students expressed their gratitude to the government for assuring them of the formation of a university by combining the seven colleges.
The students said that they were facing many problems under DU, especially regarding identity. However, after presenting their demands, the government tried to understand the issue and accepted their rationale. Finally, they are grateful to the government for assuring them of a university by combining the seven colleges.
They also said that one of their six-point demands has been implemented, but the rest of the demands have not been fulfilled yet. Therefore, they have given an ultimatum of 24 hours to fulfill the rest of the demands, after which they will discuss with everyone and announce the next program.
The new five-point demands of the students are:
- The committee formed by the Ministry of Education will publish the outline of the university within the next fifteen days.
- The university’s activities will start within a month through a presidential ordinance.
- The ongoing examinations of all years will continue as per the previously announced routine.
- Once the university activities start, all the students of the current academic year will be included in the new university.
- Discussions will be held with the student representatives, the Ministry of Education, a high-level expert committee, the principals of the seven colleges and the relevant stakeholders within the next two days to resolve the emerging situation.
Abdur Rahman, the organizer of the movement to convert the seven colleges into universities, told a press conference that no final solution has been reached yet. He also said that no solution is possible unless those who injured their classmates are brought to justice.
He said that considering the situation in the country and to prevent an unstable environment, the students of the seven colleges have withdrawn the previously announced ultimatum, but a new 24-hour ultimatum will remain in place until those who injured them are brought to justice.
Earlier, after a meeting with the Home and Information Advisors, students from seven colleges withdrew their 24-hour ultimatum to fulfill their six-point demands.
